Mobile TV
In the summer of 2007, the Austrian legislature passed an amendment to the Private Television Act (PrTV-G) which created the legal basis for mobile television.
Mobile television is a variant of digital terrestrial television in which broadcasts are optimized especially for small terminal devices (such as mobile telephones). This is done on the basis of standards such as DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) or DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting).
Pilot tests for mobile television in Austria were launched in 2005. On the basis of the 2007 Digitization Plan, KommAustria published an invitation to tender for a license to operate the first nationwide multiplex platform for mobile terrestrial broadcasting (MUX D) in the fall of 2007. The license was issued in February 2008 and confirmed by the Federal Communications Senate in March 2008. The platform will be set up and broadcasting operations launched in the course of the year 2008.
