900/1800 MHz spectrum - Overview of GSM band

Currently an allocation procedure for these bands is in preparation.

The figure below shows the frequency bands used for GSM 900 and GSM 1800 services:

The two frequency blocks are operated in FDD mode, with mobile phones transmitting in the lower band and base stations transmitting in the upper band.

Mobile operators have exclusive usage rights on this spectrum. Therefore only mobile operators are allowed to operate a base station (or a repeater, eg. GSM-repeater), see also the info-letter 2010 of the BMVIT.
