RTR - Rundfunk & Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH

Next generation access / Next generation networks

The general topic of next generation networks deals with the migration of classic telecommunications networks to next-generation packet-based networks, with a distinction being made between developments in the core network (next generation core) and in the access network (next generation access). The accompanying technical and economic changes will bring about regulatory challenges at various levels of the value chain, and such challenges have to be discussed at both the national and international level.

For the year 2009 (see calendar below for details), RTR plans to continue the NGN/NGA initiative launched in 2008, for example by holding general discussion events on the topic of NGA/NGN, offering expert workshops and lecture series and by organizing regular meetings of the industry working group, which is currently dealing with changes in the access field.

These activities are intended not only to increase awareness of the upcoming changes on the market, but also to stimulate the timely development of common positions and procedures in a cooperative dialog with market participants. At the European level, RTR also continues to cooperate with the European Regulators Group and other organizations to develop a harmonized framework, for which the input received in the course of national discussions will provide a valuable basis.

The workshop series will not bias the position of RTR or the Telekom-Control Commission (TKK) in any way; however, as the TKK's operational arm, RTR will inform the TKK of the most important results.
