Telekom Austria‘s core competence in this project was the development of suitable network concepts. On the whole, the digital line network developed in cooperation with ORF as well as the adaptations carried out in order to connect the two broadcasting locations in the DVB-T pilot project provided the high-performance transport network required to transfer the signal to Graz. In the implementation process, the greatest emphasis was placed on ensuring reliability, thus a fully redundant connection was set up for fiber optics as well as radio signals.
The interactive cycle is largely dependent on the return channels which enabled the test households in Graz to vote in surveys and to take part in other interactive applications. For the purposes of the pilot project, Telekom Austria made two types of return channel available: Dial-up access via POTS as well as ADSL. With its „always on“ functionality, ADSL proved to be the preferable option, as the connection did not have to be established again and again by the user.
