Pilot operation for digital terrestrial television and interactive MHP applacations

Results and outlook

8. Further development of MHP

The application of the MHP standard in the pilot project revealed both strengths and weaknesses. Insights as to the requirements of MHP for the design and use of a wide variety of additional digital services will influence the development of future MHP versions. This means that the test operations in Austria will provide significant input for the future development and use of MHP in all of Europe.

9. Compatibility of MHP products

The possible applications of MHP, which are still open in some areas, show that software developers, set-top box manufacturers and television stations will have to agree on essential „architectonic“ fundamentals for the design of MHP content in order to ensure reliable functioning and compatibility with the developments of future business partners in this field.

10. Return channel and data processing center
(Interactive Application Center, IAC)

The interactive return channel developed in the course of the !TV4GRAZ project enables true interaction for television viewers via remote control. This allows households to respond directly to the show currently on the air. As the main hub for interactive television, the IAC ensured the necessary exchange of data by means of interfaces to service providers, TV stations and set-top boxes, thus forming the core of the overall DVB-T interaction cycle. In the !TV4GRAZ pilot project, this functionality was implemented successfully for seven broadcasters, two service providers and four types of set-top box.

11. Experience gained in frequency engineering

By constructing a single frequency network with two broadcasting locations, the project partners were able to gain valuable experience with regard to the dissemination characteristics of DVB-T, especially in portable indoor and mobile reception. With regard to data rate management within a multiplexer, the project yielded the conclusion that in the modulation process used in Graz (16 QAM 3⁄4), the optimum capacity utilization for one conventional television channel is the transmission of three digital channels including their additional interactive services.
