In 2000/2001 two major licence awards in the field of mobile communications will take place. On the one hand, licences without nationwide coverage pursuant to Art. 125 (3a) will be allocated so that the remaining available DCS-1800 frequency spectrum can be used. The award procedure is likely to be completed in the first half of 2001.

However, of major interest is the award of licences for third-generation mobile communications services (UMTS/IMT-2000), which is scheduled for the second half of 2000. Publication of the tender notice for the UMTS/IMT-2000 frequencies is scheduled for the beginning of July.

In line with the provisions of TKG at least a two-month period for submission of bids shall be granted during which applications may be submitted.

A licence award still before the end of 2000 can be expected. Prior to the start of the tender period TKK will decide on the number of licences to be awarded as well as on the terms of the Licence Document.
