Pilot operation for digital terrestrial television and interactive MHP applacations
The Moosbachers going "digital"
Franz is looking forward to this evening because he recently used the television remote to vote for his film request of the week. In his digital videotext, he can check which film is at the top of the viewers‘ pick list.In order to receive digital television, Franz bought a small set-top box for his television set. Then all he had to do was connect this box to his antenna cable and to his TV. For interactive applications, the box is equipped with a built-in modem which is connected to the telephone line. That‘s all there is to it.

The set-top box decrypts the data containing the television signal and digital videotext functions. For the latter functions, a sort of software operating system – similar to the ones we use on our computers – has been developed. This system is called Multimedia Home Platform (MHP), and it is well on its way to becoming the standard for the new content offered by digital television in Europe and many other parts of the world.

The only fictional part of this story about the Moosbachers and their new world of television is the family itself. The other parts describe a television entertainment future which has already begun today. All of the possibilities mentioned are already reality.

Franz, his wife and their daughter can be seen as representatives of over 150 test households in Graz which experienced and evaluated digital terrestrial television in the summer of 2004.

With this book and the enclosed DVD, we describe what it took to realize this project, which organizations were involved, and – most importantly – the results and insight gained in setting up the first full cycle of digital television interaction in Austria.
