Pilot operation for digital terrestrial television and interactive MHP applacations
One important element in the simultaneous operation of several portals is a background application which itself is not visible to the user: The starter-controller software, which controls the interaction of the various ORF OK portals.

This ITV controller was developed and implemented for ORF by Sony NetServices. The controller ensures that the various ITV services function on the various set-top boxes with approximately the same quality.

MHP content management at ORF

Providing content for the ITV applications requires a tool which allows editorial staff to enter content quckly, easily, frequently and in a technically stable manner, and which prepares the content for the transfer and feed into the ITV products.

After a brief specification phase, it became clear that developing an MHP CMS (Content Management System) would be a core element in the overall ITV production cycle. In cooperation with in-house engineers, ORF‘s ITV team programmed a system especially for content provision and production in MHP services. The performance requirements of ITV CM systems are far higher than those of CM systems for Internet-based products. This is because set-top boxes have far less processing power than PCs. Whereas a PC is able to configure content itself, content packaging and representation in ITV applications mainly has to be handled by the CMS. This process becomes all the more complex when photos and graphics are included in the application on a regular basis and with several updates per day.
