Following its 2018 study on internet connections via fibre in Austria, RTR once again takes a look at fibre penetration, this time focusing on differences in demand across geography. The report provides an overview of current FTTH usage in Austria, highlights regional differences and analyses factors underlying these differences. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with FTTH providers and geographical data on broadband supply and use was analysed at the municipality level.
The analysis shows that the availability and use of fibre connections in Austria has increased continuously in recent years, but there are strong regional differences. The most important factor for FTTH use is the parallel availability of alternative infrastructures and the quality of these infrastructures. In addition to cable networks and DSL, mobile telephony also plays an important role.
